Different Types of Opal

What are the different varieties of Australian Opal?
Australian Opals are regarded as the finest quality Opals available. Opals sourced in other parts of the world are often subjected to treatments to enhance and stabilise the stone, whereas Australian Opals represent the true natural beauty of this gem.

There are 4 different varieties of Australian Opal, which are differentiated according to the body colour of the stone and where they are found.
The following is a brief description of each of the varieties:

White Opal: Found in South Australia, this variety is considered the traditional Opal that most people are familiar with. It has a milky white base colour which is formed from the natural presence of Magnesium Oxide. These are in fact sometimes referred to as ‘Milky Opals’. It can display a beautiful array of colours against this soft cream/white base colour.

Black Opal: Found in Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, this variety is famous for the deep rich colours which can be seen in high quality specimens. It has a darker grey/black base colour formed from the natural presence of Iron Oxide. This darker base helps the stone showcase vivid colours on the surface, often including deep blues, greens and reds, which are particularly sought after.

Crystal Opal: Found in the same mining regions as White and Black Opal. This variety is pure hydrated Silica, which means it is often transparent. Both White and Crystal Opals can be described as ‘light Opals’ and this variety can also show a huge array of fiery colours.

Boulder Opal: Found in Queensland, this variety is famous for the unique shape and contours of the stones. This is because the Opal is formed in the crevices of Ironstone Boulders, meaning it is cut along the vein of the Opal and a layer of the natural ironstone is left on the back. The end result is a stone with a beautiful organic look, that is able to show a mixture of deep vivid colours with the help
of its natural dark base. This variety has seen significant increases in value as supply of high-quality stones diminishes.

Although the 4 varieties present differently, the characteristic they have in common is the ability to show a magnificent play of colour. High quality stones will be able to show different colours when viewed at different angles. If you are looking for something in particular or would like to discuss your requirements in more detail, then feel free to contact us!
